Chronicle # 5: Know Thy Self — Not Just Who You Are
Chronicle # 5: Know Thy Self — Not Just Who You Are
There is a difference between knowing who you are and knowing who you were created to be.
Those are not always the same person.
Who you are right now may be shaped by your experiences, your wounds, your environment, and the voices you’ve listened to along the way. But your true self—the one God sees—was established long before the world had a chance to speak into your identity.
If we don’t understand this, we spend our lives trying to fix the wrong version of ourselves.
Before we go any further, we need to establish something foundational:
You are not trying to become worthy of God.
You already are.
Scripture tells us that we are:
Children of God (1 John 3:1)
Adopted into His family (Ephesians 1:5)
Redeemed and forgiven (Colossians 1:13–14)
Chosen (1 Peter 2:9)
Known intimately (Psalm 139:1–4)
Created with purpose (Epeshians 2:10)
Co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17)
This is your starting point—not your end goal.
The world may have told you:
you need to prove yourself
earn love
perform to be accepted
But God says: You are already Mine!
This is why identity matters so much.
Because if you don’t know who you are, you will:
try to earn what’s already been given
believe lies about yourself
build your life on unstable ground
One of the most practical ways to begin renewing your identity is through truth reminders.
You may call them affirmations—but not empty ones.
These are truth-based identity statements rooted in Scripture.
Example Identity Statements:
I am a child of God
I am loved and chosen
I am not forgotten
I am known fully and still loved
I am being transformed, not abandoned
I am invited into relationship, not performance
Write these down.
Say them out loud.
Return to them when your thoughts don’t align.
Because here’s the truth:
You don’t discover who you are by looking harder at yourself.
You discover who you are by seeing yourself through Him.
A powerful companion to this process is something known as the Father’s Love Letter—a collection of scriptures written as if God is speaking directly to you. https://www.fathersloveletter.com/
It helps bridge the gap between the truth you understand and the truth you actually believe.
This chronicle is not about becoming someone new.
It’s about remembering who you were before the world told you otherwise.
Companion Thought:
You don't discover who you are by looking harder at yourself.
You discover who you are by seeing yourself through Him.
